English Language Consultant Teacher (firm)

Terms Of Reference

 

A. Title and Contracting Form

These ToR are for an English Language Teacher that will be contracted as a Consultant(firm) for a specific period of time (initially 3 to 4 months).

B. Rainforest Foundation Norway 98A

The destruction of the world's primary forests is one of the greatest environmental disasters of our time. Each year, an area of 130,000 km2 of tropical forest disappears. Rainforest Foundation Norway is one of the leading European non-governmental organizations working to protect these forests and strengthen the rights of indigenous peoples. We work in collaboration with more than 70 indigenous and environmental organizations in 11 countries in Southeast Asia, Central Africa and the Amazon. The RFN DRC is interacting with local civil societies, international organizations, RFN international programme and RFN Oslo. Language and communication skills of the staff are critical for the success of the RFN DRC in its mission in DRC. It is therefore a priority to strengthen the general communication and English language skills of all staff. RFN DRC is seeking to contract a teacher(firm) with extensive and proven experience in teaching English to professionals.

D. Scope of Work

The language training will be offered to the current staff as well as those that will join the RFN in the future. It is envisaged that the staff be divided into two groups based on their current English proficiency level. The first group will benefit from a basic English language course tailored to their level and needs while the second group will attend targeted lessons in professional English with strong emphasis on writing and presentation skills. The expected maximum number of trainees is 5 for each group. In the initial phase of this assignment, it is expected that the teacher conduct an individual assessment to determine the level of each staff member and separate the two groups and take full responsibility for:

a) English level assessment of each staff;
b) Course program for two groups;
c) Learning software and course literature identified and purchased;
d) Three lessons delivered per week: two per week for group 1 and one lesson per week for group 2.
e) Quarterly individual evaluation reports for each trainee with recommendations

F. Institutional Arrangement

a) The course program is to be developed in close coordination and consultation with the RFN DRC;
b) The lessons are to be delivered in the RFN offices and per below set schedule. The teacher is expected to be flexible and when needed deliver the lessons on a different day or time to adjust to the operational needs and priorities of the RFN DRC. RFN shall inform the teacher of such changes minimum 48 hours in advance.

c) The teacher is responsible for making all logistical arrangements for delivery of the lessons and in close coordination with the RFN;
d) The teacher is responsible to purchase all relevant course materials

G. Duration of the Work

The teacher will be engaged for an initial period of 3 months with possibility for extension based on need, performance and RFN satisfaction. The teacher will be contracted as a consultant by RFN DRC and both parties maintain the right to end the contract at any point and with one month’s notice provided.

H. Duty Station

The course is to be delivered in Kinshasa and at the offices of the RFN DRC.

I. Qualifications of the Successful teachers used by the consultant firm

a) Minimum 5 years of professional experience in teaching English;
b) Excellent written and spoken English language skills a requirement and English as native language a strong asset;
c) If English is the native language, the contractor shall have at least basic french knowledge;
d) Strong professional communication and inter-personal skills and able to transfer knowledge to the RFN DRC staff;
e) The eligible candidate is independent, committed and reliable;
f) Flexibility and ability to adjust to change circumstances and needs.

J. Financial Remuneration

The financial remuneration is subject to negotiation based on the qualifications of the consultant firm.

K. Application

The interested candidates are invited to submit their technical and financial proposals for this assignment. The technical proposal shall include:
a) The consultant firm experience including resume of teachers to be used;
b) A proposed methodology for how the course program will be developed, how the lessons will be planned and delivered and how software and course material will be purchased and used;
c) A work plan illustrating all steps that the candidate will take to carry out the course
d) Certification or documentation indicating applicant’s English teaching skills;
e) Any other information that the Consultant finds relevant.

The financial proposal shall indicate the total amount required for covering all aspects of the course broken down into the following categories:
